The Australian designed and manufactured Bushfire Blanket provides personal protection against the three forms of bushfire heat penetration; radiant heat, ember attack and thermal heat transfer.
Radiant heat is the heat you feel from a fire. It is the biggest killer in a fire. The first defence provided by the Bushfire Blanket is the aluminium based reflective radiant heat barrier. By reflecting the majority of radiant heat away from the user, this improves the effectiveness of the 100% Australian wool thermal layer.
Unlike conventional wool blankets, the Bushfire Blanket is not wrapped around the user, but is laid flat over the user and covers the area around the user. To be effective, a radiant heat barrier must be exposed to the air and not touch other objects, otherwise thermal conduction will occur through the blanket. The Bushfire Blanket maximises the exposure of the radiant heat barrier to the air and limits the exposure of the surrounding area to the radiant heat. This makes use of the natural thermal insulating properties of the surrounding ground and provides a protected area around the user.
During a bushfire large amounts of burning debris (leaves, twigs etc) are carried into the air. As they land forward of the fire front, they ignite any combustible material. These embers can burn holes through conventional wool blankets. To prevent this from occurring, the Bushfire Blanket has a fireproof second layer constructed of woven fibreglass.
The third defence provided the Bushfire Blanket is insulation from thermal conduction. Thermal conduction occurs through materials exposed to high temperatures. The high temperatures of a bushfire will eventually conduct through most materials. Insulation will slow the conduction of this heat.
The 100% Australian wool blanket layer provides excellent thermal insulation and is naturally fire retardant.
